Shane Deeter is a professional custom saddle and bootmaker. His saddles, boots, and other leather products are widely known for their durability, comfort, and artistic appeal. He has been in business for 17 years, but his experience with leather work goes as far back as the age of five. His father tooled belts and wallets, and Shane was right in the middle of it. Growing up on a ranch, he also learned the importance of good tack and how to repair it. Then in 1987 his father started a boot and saddle repair shop where Shane worked until leaving for college in 1989. While attending Utah state university, Shane made custom leather goods to help fund his education. In 1994 Shane established Deeter custom saddlery and started making quality boots and saddles. In 2000 it became his full time occupation. Shane is the President for the Colorado saddlemakers association. He has won several awards including “best craftsman” at the Western art roundup in Winnemucca, Nevada, and first place in the boot category at the world leather debut in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Dick Sherer is a founding member of CSMA and he served as Secretary-Treasurer from 1991 to 2003.  He currently serves as the chairman of the CSMA Pass It On committee.    Harness makers and saddlers are part of my family’s history dating back to the New England Colonies.  I began my apprenticeship when I was 15.  From 1959 to 1965, I studied under four Porter saddlemakers in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. After completing my doctorate in 1969, I pursued a dual career as a research\exploration geologist and as a part-time custom saddlemaker and silversmith.  Sherer Custom Saddles, Inc. was established in 1973 and I decided to pursue my artwork full time in 1990.  My saddles received twelve first place awards at the CSMA Custom Saddle Shows from 1992 to 1999, and in 1994 I received the Cowboy Leather Carver of the Year award.  In 1997 I was selected by other saddlemakers as one of the top thirty custom saddlemakers in North America.  My leather artwork has been exhibited at the major cowboy art\gear shows in Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho and Texas. Today I compete with painters, potters and jewelers for space in juried art shows. I am the author of Horseman’s Handbook of Western Saddles and over 200 articles on the art and business of leatherwork.
